Workshop #1: Writing for the Professional: A workshop to sharpen the tools in your writing toolbox Combining freelance writing and corporate communications experience with skills as a facilitator and workshop developer, Teresa has designed an upbeat, interactive writing workshop that reviews writing basics, demystifies the writing process and offers techniques to improve on-the-job writing. Writing on-the-job is more demanding than ever. Not only are employees expected to be content experts, they're expected to be able to communicate well to a range of audiences. Scrutiny of written documents is high, and tolerance for errors is low. Professional writing is different than writing for school, for publication or for creative pursuits. Yet few workers - whether managers, technicians or front line staff - ever receive training on writing in the workplace. Presented in a full-day format, the workshop is intended for colleague groups of 10 to 15 participants. Emphasis is placed on building an editorial team in the workplace. Topics include writing resources, a grammar refresher, the challenges of institutional writing and the writing process. Workshop #2: Building an Editorial Team: How to develop and support a team of writers and editors in the workplace Employees spend considerable time writing – emails, reports, letters, briefing notes, websites, policies and more – and at times writing on the job can feel frustrating and solitary. You can bring out the best in your staff by fostering a supportive writing environment and developing their editorial skills. This one-day Building an Editorial Team workshop for managers and supervisors is about implementing a constructive, team-oriented approach to writing in your branch or office. This workshop may also be useful for YG staff who oversee large multi-contributor publications or documents. Building on the success of the Writing for the Professional workshop, this course includes similar core content (tools and resources, the writing process, the challenges of institutional writing) and introduces topics including writer/editor/proofreader roles and practices, house style and style sheets, workflow, communication and challenges. [note: this workshop is intended for workplace leaders who have not already taken the original 'Writing for the Professional' workshop] *New* workshop in development: Writing for the Web: Check back for workshop description. YG Staff: Workshops #1 and #2 are offered several times a year to Yukon government employees - contact the Public Service Commission to register.
